A wonderful day!


It's amazing how easy it is for me to dwell and ruminate on things that seem negative.  I put time and energy into thinking about how things should have happened differently.  By the end of the day it could almost seem like it was "one of those days" when really today was a fabulous day.  Why don't I spend time replaying in my mind the wonderful things that happen?

Josiah had a wonderful day.  He was happy and alert.  He ate well and played and smiled.  He even enjoyed his exersaucer for fifteen minutes.  He didn't moan today and the nurse practitioner said she'd never seen him like this.  He usually sleeps in his grandparents' arms in the afternoon but today he was happy to listen to Grandpa's stories, songs, and prayers.  

Isaac and I enjoyed our last session at the library.  He even guessed that the letter of the day would be "P".  He painted with a Q-tip and we took out a funny book from the library that he wants everyone to read over and over again.  Isaac and I danced and cuddled and pretended we were horses and various other animals.  I had delicious leftovers for lunch and dinner and lots of help.  I was even able to enjoy a quick visit with my in-laws.  All in all, a great day.


However, when my nurse left this afternoon, she let me know that she wouldn't be back as she was taking a night shift.  I was just telling Graham and others this week how blessed we were to have our nurse.  She's been great.  We were supposed to get a call tonight to let us know if we'll have a nurse tomorrow.  We'll find out in the morning.  It's disappointing for me and I'm also sad for Josiah who will need to get to know a new caregiver.  I called Graham to let him know and he said, "She was here for a reason."  The same will be true for our next wonderful nurses.  I am reminded of words from one of Ann Voskamps's blog posts: "God didn’t put people in your path mostly for your convenience; He put you there for theirs."  May we be a blessing.

They kept saying in the hospital that Josiah didn't have much reserve.  Perhaps I don't have much reserve.  I didn't feel like I had much reserve when I opened the washing machine tonight and discovered that something had gone through the wash that shouldn't have.  Oh, that happens more times than I care to say.  I check pockets three times and it still happens!  : )

  4. I love your blogs, Elizabeth! Josiah looks so good...you'd never know that he has a problem. Jesus still does miracles...we trust Him!! Aunt Doris

  5. Oh Elizabeth, you have reserve! When I read your blog I want to shout to the world 'this is how it's done, people, this thing called pain.' Such an honor that you share this story, that we catch glimpses of huge grace in nurses and grandpas and borscht-givers. Thanks for taking the time at the end of everyday for this visit.
